Yes, You Can Renew Your Indian Passport in Australia — Here's How to Do It Right
We've heard from several members of our NRI community that renewing an Indian passport in Australia is "not possible." Let's clear the air right away: it is absolutely possible. What's really happening is that the process trips people up — the wrong portal, the wrong consulate, a missing document — and frustration turns into the belief that renewal can't be done here at all.
This guide walks you through the correct process, the realistic timelines, and the most common mistakes to avoid.
Who Actually Handles Your Passport Application
Passport services for Indian citizens in Australia are outsourced by the High Commission of India (Canberra) and the Consulates General in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to VFS Global, which operates the India Passport and Visa Services Centres (IPVSC) across Australia.
You do not submit your application directly to the consulate (unless you're a diplomat or an official of an international organisation). Everything goes through VFS.

The Number One Mistake: Using the Wrong Portal
Most complaints we hear trace back to this. The domestic Passport Seva portal (https://passportindia.gov.in) is for residents of India. If you live in Australia, you must apply through the Global Passport Seva portal for the Australia jurisdiction, as linked from the VFS Global website.
The workflow is:
- Fill the application form online on the Global Passport Seva portal.
- Print and sign the completed form. VFS Australia accepts only online-filled, printed and signed forms — handwritten forms are not accepted.
- Gather the documents on the official VFS checklist for your application type.
- Submit via one of the two options below.
Two Ways to Submit
Option 1 — In person: Book an appointment at your nearest IPVSC (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and other locations) and submit your documents there. Photography and photocopying services are available at the centres for a small fee.
Option 2 — By post: If you live far from a centre — Adelaide, Brisbane, regional towns — you can post or courier your complete application to the designated P.O. Box for your jurisdiction. Your new passport is returned to you by secure post or courier. This option is a lifesaver for many and not widely known.
Know Your Jurisdiction
Each consulate covers specific states and territories, and applying to the wrong one causes rejection or long delays. For example, the Consulate General in Melbourne covers Victoria and Tasmania. Check which consulate covers your state before applying, and use the corresponding VFS submission address.
Realistic Timelines — Plan Ahead
- Standard processing: 6 to 8 weeks. If your previous passport was issued in Australia by the same consulate, it can be faster (around 4 weeks).
- If your previous passport was issued by a different Passport Issuing Authority (in India or another country), expect longer than 8 weeks.
- Tatkal (expedited) service is NOT available in Australia. Do not believe any agent who promises it.
- Postal transit time is extra and not counted in processing time.
Golden rule: do not book travel until the new passport is in your hands. VFS and the Government of India explicitly state they are not responsible for travel plans made before receiving the service.
What If There’s a Genuine Emergency?
Short Validity and Emergency Passports are no longer issued in Australia. In cases of extreme emergency (such as a death in the family), the consulate can issue a one-way Emergency Certificate allowing you to travel to India. For the return journey, you would need to obtain a new passport from the nearest Passport Issuing Authority in India.
Common Pitfalls That Cause “Renewal Is Impossible” Frustration
Incomplete applications. These are returned to you — with courier return fees — and you start again. Follow the VFS checklist for your exact application type, item by item.
Photo problems. Photos must meet ICAO specifications. Incorrect photos are one of the most common rejection reasons. Using the photography service at the VFS centre removes this risk.
Signature mismatches. Your signature on the form should match your previous passport.
Reference letters. In some cases, applicants are asked for reference letters from Indian passport holders residing in Australia. If you genuinely cannot arrange these, contact VFS directly to ask about alternatives for your situation rather than abandoning the application.
Police verification. Renewals involving an address change or a lost passport can trigger police verification in India, adding weeks. Ensure every detail you provide is accurate.
Applications for minors. Both parents must sign Annexure D (or Annexure C if only one parent is available), and copies of both parents' passports and visa pages are required. Parents must accompany the child to the appointment.
A Word of Caution About Agents
Only VFS Global is the authorised service provider for Indian passport services in Australia. The application itself is a self-service process, and no third-party agent can speed it up or bypass requirements. Be wary of anyone charging significant fees with promises of "expedited" processing that officially does not exist.
If Your Application Is Genuinely Stuck
Escalate in this order:
- VFS helpline — check your application status online first, then contact the VFS contact centre for your jurisdiction.
- The consular/passport wing of your jurisdiction's Indian consulate — by email, with your application reference number.
- MADAD portal (https://madad.gov.in) — the Government of India's official consular grievance redressal system, as a formal last resort.
The Bottom Line
Renewing your Indian passport in Australia is routine — thousands of NRIs do it every year. Start early (ideally when your passport has 9–12 months of validity left, since many visas require at least 6 months), use only the official VFS Global and consulate websites, follow the checklist exactly, and never finalise travel before the passport arrives.
Always verify the latest requirements, fees, and addresses on the official VFS Global website (https://services.vfsglobal.com/aus/en/ind) and your consulate's website, as procedures can change.
